Burundi - Butihinda - Coffee Beans
This coffee impresses with its caramel aroma. It has a smooth body combined with a sweet lemony touch and a delicate floral nuance. In Burundi, coffee production is dominated by small farmers who organize and sell their coffee as part of a cooperative, just like in neighboring Tanzania and Rwanda. A single batch of coffee purchased can therefore affect many lives. Burundi produces high-quality Arabica coffee (98% of total production) mainly through more than 600,000 smallholder farmers with small plots of 1 hectare. Coffee, which is located in the Great Rift Valley, is an important export (80%), known for its bright, fruity and sweet profiles, often with Bourbon, Jackson and Mibirzi varieties. Production, which peaked at 150,000 60kg bags in 2024/25, is concentrated in northern regions such as Ngozi and Kayanza.
The Muyinga region is considered one of the best growing areas in Burundi, where only ripe cherries are picked by hand. The microclimate of the hills and mountains in Muyinga, combined with the fertile soil, is ideal for growing coffee. The high density of rivers ensures a gentle breeze. It is grown at high altitudes (often over 1700 m above sea level).
