TANZANIA - PEABERRY - Mbaya, Songwe Region - Coffee Beans

TANZANIA PEABERRY impresses with its strong cocoa bean and fresh pink grapefruit flavor. This coffee is suitable for making espresso.

What does PEABERRY mean?

Coffee is a fruit, and as such, it has seeds. The coffee beans we know and love are the seeds of coffee cherries. Usually, these cherries develop two seeds, but for unknown reasons, some cherries develop only one. We know these one-offs as peach fruits, named for their round resemblance to peas. The genetics industry has not yet figured out why this genetic variability occurs? Perhaps due to weather, pollination or plant nutrition. At the moment, no one can replicate it. Less than 10% of coffees are peach fruits.

Currently, there is no easy way to tell peach cherries apart from regular cherries. Peach cherries are only found after processing and grading. Imagine the effort it takes to grade 1,000 pounds of green coffee to get just 50 pounds of peach cherries to sell separately. This extra work, processing, and scarcity allows producers to command a higher price for their peach cherries.

Henry & Partners Farm was founded in 2013. It operates several plots of land totaling over 100 acres, on which it has planted over 80,000 coffee trees, specifically Coffea arabica, since its inception. The farm employs local residents, has planted fruit trees, built facilities, and constructed all of its buildings. It has also established several ponds in the region for water retention and has its own agricultural machinery and equipment.

SUSTAINABLE MANAGEMENT

The Henry & Partners farm prefers environmentally friendly management that supports the preservation of species diversity in the area. This is achieved, among other things, by targeted planting of various types of trees together with coffee trees and by building water bodies in the area, thanks to which the farm actively participates in retaining water in the landscape and its effective management. This has a positive effect on the microclimate of the area. It creates job opportunities for local residents all year round at a fair wage. Employees here gain a stable background and the opportunity for personal development, whereby the farm directly contributes to improving the living standards of residents of neighboring municipalities. It supports and makes education accessible to all local residents. Specifically, for example, by reconstructing and building school classrooms, a canteen, accommodation buildings for teachers, building a social building and preparing land for growing crops for the school canteen.
